Fengyun 2
Fenyun 2 (FY-2) geostationary meteorological satellite was developed by SAST, with other 18 organisations also involved in the development programme. Development of the satellite began in 1982 and the first satellite was produced in 1994. Two experimental satellites (FY-2A and 2B) and three operational satellites (FY-2C, 2D and 2E) were launched between 1997 and 2008. Due to the delay in the Fengyun 4 programme, three more satellites (FY-2F, 2G and 2H) have been scheduled as a stopgap.
Fengyun 2 was a spin-stabilised geostationary satellite, with a launch mass of 1,369kg and orbital mass of 536kg. The satellite carried a scanning radiometer with an S-band and a UHF data transmitter. The two principal sensors worked in visible and infrared spectrum, with best resolution of 1.25km and 5.0km respectively. A water vapour sensor was also carried onboard the satellite. The satellite normally operates at 105°E and 86.5°E in the Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO), with a designed operational life of three years.
